The Lakewood Boys tennis team competed at the Regional tournament on October 4th and 5th. We had a very successful season and this continued into the tournament. The improvement in play over the past few months has been amazing!! Overall we got three 3rd place finishes and a 4th place finish against some very tough teams!! Danny Kingman got 3rd place in 2 singles, Henry McKinney and Clayton Guevara got 3rd place in 2 doubles and Tommy Landmark and Sheldon Borakove were 3rd in 4 doubles. Michael Tate and Josh Moore placed 4th in 3 doubles. A special thanks to all the coaches who contributed so much during the year, Coaches Peterson, Graves and Landmark. They were all especially valuable at Regionals where every match counts and often we had 3 matches going on at once.
To make it to the State tournament, you either need to win the tournament or have your only loss be against the Regional winner, so if you ended up in 3rd place and your only loss was to the winner, you play one more match, winner goes to the State Championship. Henry McKinney and Clayton Guevara got this opportunity against Arapahoe, so far we were 0-5 against Arapahoe. The Tigers got off to a quick start winning the first 2 games, then Arapahoe went on a roll, winning 10 of the next 12 games, so the Tigers had lost the 1st set and were down 1-4 in the second set. The Tigers roared back to tie the set at 4 all, then 5 all, and then we won the next 2 games to take the second set!! The Tigers continued to roll, up 3 to 1 in the 3rd set, Arapahoe came back to tie it at 3 all, but the Tigers were not done, they came from behind to break serve once again, then Clayton held serve, 5-3 Tigers, Henry stepped up to serve for the match and won his serve easily and the celebration began.
